5 Side Gigs to Boost Your Cash Flow

Whether you’re saving for a major purchase like a car or a new home, or you’re building a nest egg for a dream vacation, a little extra cash flow will help get you to your goal faster. Here are a few side gigs that can help boost your income without taking up too much of your free time:

1. Child care. Busy parents can always use some additional help looking after their brood, even if it’s just for a few hours here and there. Perhaps you can spare an hour or two in the morning to look after the child of a neighbor who has to leave early for a long commute. Or maybe you can offer a few hours on a weekend so parents can run errands without the kids in tow. A standing date-night babysitting offer is appealing to just about any parent.

2. Substitute teaching. If your primary job has flexible hours or you work nights, consider becoming a substitute teacher. Check with your local school district to find out what the requirements are in terms of experience and scheduling, and give it a go at the head of the class.

3. Retail sales. Stop by some of your favorite community stores and find out if they’re looking for weeknight or weekend help. If you’re a fan of the shop and its wares, you’ll be a natural for a part-time sales position—and you may benefit from an employee discount as well.

4. Pet-sitting. Do you love animals? Then a pet-care or dog-walking gig may be the perfect source of extra income for you, especially attractive to those pet parents looking to avoid pricey boarding fees. Put the offer out around your neighborhood and hang flyers in your local supermarket or grocery store to advertise your services.

5. Craft business. If you’re artistic or crafty, consider setting up an online business to offer your creations to the world. From woodwork to jewelry to gift items, there are a wide range of products you could potentially sell online, using social media as a way to spread the word. Also consider booking a table or booth at any local craft fairs. This could quickly expand the market for your creations.
